Persona 3
30 years ago, the Persona series made its debut into the video game world and as I looked back onto the series, I soon realized that one of the most popular games of the the Persona series, Persona 3 is now 20 years old.
Persona 3 came in 2006 for the Playstation 2 in Japan in 2006 and then in 2007 for North America. It was developed by Atlus and it was the fourth installment of the Persona series.
The player assumes the role of a high student who had transferred to Gekkoukan High School and meets the members of the S.E.E.S. (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad) who investigate an anomaly known as the Dark Hour and do battle with monsters called Shadows using a physical manifestation of their psyche aka Personas.
Joining the protagonist, are Yukari Takeba, the popular girl, Junpei Iori, the class clown and best friend, Akihiko Sanada, the captain of the boxing team, Mitsuru Kirijo, the class president, Fuuka Yamagishi, the shy girl, Algis, the female android, Ken Amada, an elementary school student who lost his mother due to another persona user, Koromaru, a dog who can summon a persona and Shinjiro Aragaki, a returning member of SEES who previously had left the group. Together, they make it their mission to discover the secrets of the Dark Hour, Tartarus and defeat the Shadows.
There is a reason why many fans of this game wanted to a remake of it. It was named as one of the best games of the PS2 era along with many other awards during its original run.
The gameplay was fun, the characters were amazing and such a joy to interact with which is an important of the game. I love the uses of the works of Carl Jung where people use a "Mask" from their true selves in everyday life.
This games features themes about depression and the darkness that live inside each one of us. Something I myself can very much relate to as I have my battles with depression. Though, I must admit, I did feel a bit awkward with how they used a gun-like object called an Evoker to their heads to unlock their Personas. Now let me be clear, I do not believe they might cause any harm by doing so, please leave them alone, they are just simply making art and a great story.
I also love the Personas in the game, especially how they were inspired by numerous religions throughout history. Such like, Angel, Apsaras, Chimera, Archangel, Valkyrie, Principality and so much more.
Like I said before this game was extremely popular, so it was no surprise to me that a remake of the original game was coming out. In fact, in 2024, this game was one of the fastest selling games in series' history because it sold a million units within the first week.
Persona is such an underrated series in my humble opinion and it is really cool to see it be so successful. I wonder when Persona 6 is coming out?
Until Next Time!
God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
