Daredevil (2003 Film)

Recently I decided to look back on some old films from my younger days and see how I felt about it now that I am a bit older and one of those said films is Daredevil which made its way to the silver screen in 2003.

Now Daredevil is one of my personal favorite comic book characters ever so this movie was something that I really wanted to see.

The movie stars Ben Affleck and according to Affleck, he himself was a big fan of Daredevil and was super excited about getting the role. In fact, he even read a ton of Daredevil comics in order to faithfully portray the character faithfully. Which I appreciate that!

When I first saw the movie, I thought it was alright, I didn't really feel that it truly captured the dark and gritty feel of the world that Daredevil lives in which is Hell's Kitchen. To add on to that point, it kind of felt a little goofy to me which again is so not Daredevil.

And honestly, I didn't think any differently during the re-watch of this film. Again, I didn't think it was bad, but it certainly could have been better. One of my biggest complains about the movie was how everything about the writing just seemed to go all over the place. It felt like they were trying to cram in five movies into one. The director of the movie himself Mark Steven Johnson even admitted on the twenty year anniversary of the movie saying how he wanted to put so much into it, not to mention that they wanted him to cut out half-hour of it and make it more of a love story.

But to be perfectly honest, they could have made at least three movies with everything they had put into this movie. But this just my humble opinion.

I thought Affleck did a great job as Daredevil and really showed what could have been. It is just a shame that the overall film didn't really help him. Affleck himself even hated the film which it is sad because he has gone on record saying how much he loved Daredevil.

Another issue I had was the lack of Catholicism in the film, sure there were a few bits here and there, but if you read the comic books, it is a huge part of the story. Matt uses his faith to get through his daily life whether it be as Daredevil as well as his life as  lawyer.

Speaking of Catholics, I really loved the character of Fr. Everett who was played by Derrick O'Connor who sadly is no longer with us Rest In Peace! 🙏🙏🙏

I also enjoyed seeing the cameos of Stan Lee (RIP), Frank Miller and Kevin Smith in the film.

I really hope that someday Daredevil will get another chance at a movie. Heck! I wish we could a standalone video game, but one can only hope.

Until Next Time!

God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
