Gang Green! The 1991 Eagles Defense
This might be one of the greatest defenses in football history and I don't think gets enough credit that they deserved and honestly I think it is simply because they never won and championship and were broken up the following year.
And that was the Gang Green Defense presented by the Philadelphia Eagles. Although this defense was build by Buddy Ryan who was fired prior to the season started with many of his players on the team. There has to be some love given to Bud Carson who was the defensive coordinator during that season. Many people associate Carson as the defensive mastermind of the Steel Curtain defense of the 1970s. Carson brought a ton of balance to the Gang Green defense and certainly showed out there on the field.
Of course it helps having such great talent like Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner, Andre Waters, Eric Allen all of who went to the pro bowl that season. So yeah, this defense was loaded, don't believe me, ask Troy Aikman lol.
This defense made a rare feat during the season as they held teams to the fewest passing yards, rushing yards and total yards. Which hadn't happen since 1975 at that point. 😮
Also this defense led the league in sacks and fumbles recovered.
The only thing that really stopped the Gang Green defense was Randall Cunningham getting injury during a preseason game. Which to this very day, has left many football fans wondering, just how good this team could have been if Cunningham didn't get hurt.
It is also sad because Jerome Brown lost his life in an automobile accident following the season along with his nephew (Rest In Peace) 🙏🙏🙏.
Also (RIP) to the great Reggie White who sadly past away twenty years ago.
Watching these videos on such great defense like this team makes me wish I was alive during this time period. Seeing how this team went after quarterbacks was certainly entertaining to watch.
Sadly, I don't think defense like this would be allow anymore in football. If you haven't noticed, I am big on the defensive side of the ball lol. That's why I have been really getting into the history of great defenses in football. Again, I never got to see these defenses compete back in the day and this one was certainly one I wish I could have seen in person.
Maybe in due time, I will write another great defense.
Until Next Time!
God Bless and Be Safe!🙏🙏🙏
