1986 Boston Celtics! 40 Years Later!
Recently, the New York Knicks have ended their streak of not winning the NBA championship until the 2026 season where they would ultimately defeat the San Antonio Spurs to win their first title since 1973. Congrats to the Knicks!
Now with that being said, seeing this reminded me that this year marks 40 years since the Boston Celtics won their 16th NBA title back in 1986 where they defeated the Houston Rockets in six games. To many fans of basketball, this team is consider the greatest team of all time.
Although I was not alive to see them play at the time, getting to hear stories from my father, along with many others who were there watching them at the time, including some documentaries I have watched about the team, I can honestly see why people believe it.
I am list of talent on the roster as well as the coaches and of course, the late great Red Auerbach. The Head Coach at the time was KC Jones, who was apart of the original Celtic dynasty in the 1960s. Then you had all-time great players such as Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, Jerry Sighting, Bill Walton and many more.
This team is insane to me because these guys had a home record of 40-1 which is mind blowing. But what I came to learn about this incredible basketball team was how self-less they were. The ball movement was tremendous! Even more impressive was the off the ball movement, nowadays, a lot of players don't seem to do much without the ball in their hands. This is just my humble opinion.
Watching videos of this Celtics team is always fun because of the passing and honestly, these guys looked like they loved hanging around each other, not just on the court and listening to the players themselves talking about the season, just proves it even more.
Many consider the trio of Bird, McHale and Parish as the greatest front court in NBA history which to be fair, it is hard to argue against that. I mean Bird won his third consecutive MVP during the season along with Walton winning the Sixth Man of the year award. Bird was basically a triple double machine and having guys like McHale and Parish who was the definition of a workhorse, it is hard to go against them.
Personally, I believe KC Jones should get a little more credit as the Head Coach of the Celtics because as good as the team was, you needed someone to keep everyone together and KC did a great job of doing that. Winning a championship once is tough enough as it is, but win a title multiple times and reaching the finals multiple times throughout the decade is truly incredible.
What I found even more amazing was how they went through the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics swept Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the first round, then moved and defeated the Atlanta Hawks in five games and finally sweeping the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals. And of course, winning over the Rockets to win the NBA title.
Another thing, Larry Bird maybe the greatest basketball player of all time. In my humble opinion, Bird was the most well-rounded players ever. He could score, he rebounded the ball, he was a great passer and defender. Plus, he was about making his teammates better and I always admire and respected that about him.
Happy 40th to the 1986 Boston Celtics!
Until Next Time!
God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
