Ten Commandments (1956 Film)

This past weekend, many of us here were at home with our loved ones and celebrated Easter. And one of the things that we do around the house was watch the Ten Commandments movie which this marks its 70th anniversary.

This film first came out in 1956 and has a length of 220 minutes which basically means that this film is four hours long 😮. Ten Commandments was directed by Cecil B. DeMille which this film ended up being his last movie before his passing in 1959 (Rest In Peace).

The movie follows the life of Moses through the Book Of Exodus from the Bible along with other sources. Such as the novel Prince of Egypt by Dorothy Clarke Wilson, J.H. Ingraham's Pillar of Fire and On Eagle's Wings by A.E. Southon.

At the time of its release to the public, the Ten Commandments movie was the most expensive movie ever to be made which was a 13 million dollars budget. In fact, it was one of the most successful films ever grossing a grand total of 122.7 million dollars in its initial release. WOW!

Another fun fact, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, this movie is the eighth most successful film in history with the adjustment to inflation. It was the highest grossing film of 1956 and the highest grossing film of the entire decade.

In 1999 the Ten Commandments was named to National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and has aired on prime time television during Easter/Passover since 1973.

One of the things I learned about this movie was that it was actually a remake. When I was doing my research for this blog post, I discovered that the Ten Commandments was once a silent film in 1923 which was also directed by DeMille himself.

Personally, I really enjoyed the chemistry between John Derek who played as Joshua and Debra Paget as Lilia are always fun to watch. I also always remain amazed with the scene of the movie where the Hebrews are being chased around the water and seeing the water fall onto the chariots. For 1956, it was truly incredible to see them pull off a scene like that.

I think what I am impressed with, is how despite it being a four hour movie, I never got bored with it. A lot of movies are usually two hours at least and sometimes it is hard to just sit back and enjoy. So for them to be able to pull that off for such a long movie is truly incredible.

The cast was always fun to watch in each scene and it felt like they all just wanted to make a great film. Even to this day, just something about this film brings me hope.

Congrats to everyone involved on this movie!

Until Next Time!

God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
