Arturo "Thunder" Gatti Tribute
Alittle bit ago, I had written about one of my favorite boxers ever in "Irish" Micky Ward. Well today, I figure that I would write about another famous boxer who sadly is no longer with us and is Arturo "Thunder" Gatti.
The second half of this amazing trilogy of boxing matches along with Ward, Gatti was such an incredible fighter who competed from 1991 to 2007. Gatti held a World title in two different weight classes, the first being the IBF junior lightweight championship from 1995 to 1998 and the WBC super lightweight title from 2004 to 2005.
Thunder scored four Fight of the Night Awards from The Ring Magazine in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003 before eventually retiring in 2007. Gatti was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012 in his first year of eligibility.
Arturo fought in a grand total of 49 fights in his professional career winning 40 matches (31 by way of knockout) to go along with nine losses.
He was called Thunder for a very good reason as Gatti was known for his all-action style of fighting, better known as a slugger. In fact, despite being known as a a slugger, Gatti has shown throughout his career that he can be very technically sound in the ring.
Going back to the trilogy with Micky Ward, these two put on a show that left quite an impression on a young Joshua Yoder and became one of the biggest reasons as to why I love the sport of boxing and just fights in general.
Gatti just would not back down when he got into the ring regardless of who he was facing. I mean, looking back on the history of his career, It really doesn't surprise me that he was called the human highlight reel. Fellow boxer Oscar De La Hoya has stated that Gatti was the hardest hitter that he has ever faced.
It really is a shame that Gatti is no longer with us, It is crazy to me that it has been nearly 20 years since his death. I am not going to get into his death because of issues that surround it. All that I will say that I hope and pray that Gatti is at peace.
With that being said, I also want to extend my thoughts and prayers to Arturo Gatti Jr who sadly passed away back in October of last year. I pray that you are at peace as well.
For those who out there struggling mentally, please reach out. You are loved!
Until Next Time!
God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
