Jet Grind Radio

Holy crap! I can not believe that this incredible video game came out 25 years ago. I am certainly getting older lol. In the month of June in the year 2000, I was introduced to one of my personal favorite video games of all time in the form of Jet Grind Radio for the Sega Dreamcast. Nowadays it is called Jet Set Radio, but when it first came out in North America, it was called Jet Grind Radio.

A while back I had written about the Dreamcast being my favorite system I had ever played. And this game was one of the reasons as to why and honestly, this game basically described who I am as a person whether it be the type of music, the rollerblading, the culture it was about at the time. It basically help led me to the things I love to this very day and began a part of who I am.

The player controls a member of a youth gand called the GGs who uses inline skates to traverse the streets of Tokyo while competing against other gangs as well as evading the authorities. The story is guided by the head DJ called Professor K and his underground music station, Jet Set Radio.

This game was inspired by the Japanese popular culture like manga, anime and such games like PaRappa The Rapper as well as the hip-hop culture of the 1980s like graffiti.

The plot follows the GGs as they look to control the streets of Tokyo-to from rivals like Poison Jam, Love Shockers and the Noise Tanks. But the GGs also have to deal with Captain Onishima and the authorities are also chasing them down. But as you progress through the game, you find out that something more sinister is happening and it is up to the GGs to stop it.

What can I say that is so great about this game that hasn't already been said? I mean the gameplay was so much fun, the grinding to tagging the streets. Visually this game still holds up and is incredibly beautiful, the art work still inspires me to this very day. And music, holy crap the music is one of my favorite parts from the game is so dope. The variety of music is still fun to listen to even after all these years which included J-Pop, hip hop, funk, electronic dance, rock, acid jazz, metal and trip hop.

Like another awesome Dreamcast game, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio was one of the first 3D open world type games which have now become common place. I miss this game as well as the Dreamcast itself.

Such great memories!

Until Next Time!

God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
