Dead Or Alive (2006 Film)

Last night I was a little bit bored and was flipping through Youtube and I sound that there was a full movie of Dead or Alive, so for the heck of it, I decided to watch. I mean, this wasn't the first time I had seen the movie but it had been a while since so I figured why not rewatch it and see if I think any different about it.

The film was based off a fighting video game of the same name and was created by a company called Techmo. Which I really loved playing growing up as a kid.

Unfortunately, this movie didn't really do too well. In fact, it was a box-office bomb. DOA had a movie budget of 30 million dollars, only had achieved 7.7 million dollars at the box office. Yikes! 😱

As I watched the movie last night, I could see why the movie struggled. Don't get me wrong, this was more of a guilty pleasure kind of movie and to be fair video game movies historically don't have a great track record.

I appreciate the fact that they tried to follow the plot of the gaming series, but at the same time, I think they tried to cram in too much stuff in the film as well. One of the reviews I read when I was researching for this blog post had said that this movie to the Charlie's Angels movies of the early 2000s which I could totally see that in this film.

The plot follows Kasumi (Devon Aoki) a shinobi princess who is trying to find out what happened to her older brother Hayate who competed in the DOA tournament the previous year. She along with several other fighters are then invited to the island to compete against one another for a 10 million dollar prize. Of course not everything is what it seems to be and Kasumi along with Ryu Hayabusa and many others try to put a stop to it.

Now again, to be fair I really did think the cast tried their best to perform as these characters. Just I guess, things didn't work out which sadly does happen at times, but again, I do appreciate the effort they made.

I will say one of the things I do like about the movie was the setting of the tournament. The island itself was pretty cool as the primary shooting of the film was in China.

It is a shame that the movie didn't turn out too well because again you can tell they put in a lot of effort into the movie. According to Jaime Pressley who played Tina Armstrong in the film praised the director Corey Yuen and the crew who worked 17 hour days only getting four hours of rest and getting back up and doing it all over again.

This film had a lot of potential, it just again didn't work out too well. But like I said before, this was one of those movies where I watch again and enjoy it.

Until Next Time!

God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
