Command And Conquer (1995 Video Game)
This month marks the debut of the very first game of one of my favorite gaming franchises and it was called Command and Conquer.
30 years ago is incredible game make its way to the MAC, PC, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64 and the original Playstation. The game was created and published by Westwood Studios who sadly are no longer in business (RIP).
The game is set in an alternate history and tells the story about a war between two rival factions. The first faction is the United Nations funded GDI (Global Defense Initiative) and the other is a revolutionary militant organization called the Brotherhood of Nod led by a mysterious figure only known as Kane.
Both factions use what is called a Mobile Construction Vehicle which are used to help gather resources to help develop their respective bases as well as produce troops and armor. The only way to win each level is to either destroy or capture the enemy base.
The setting of the game again follows an alternate history where in 1995, a meteor crash landed near the river Tiber in Italy. The meteorite is covered in an alien substance that is called Tiberium by the beginning of the game, has now spread across the planet taking away its natural resources due to the toxic gas from the fossilized crystals from the Tiberium.
The Global Defense Initiative sees this as a threat to the planet, while the Brotherhood of Nod see this as an opportunity to drive humanity to their step in evolution.
There are two different campaigns you can play in this game where you can play as GDI and the other one as a member of the Brotherhood of Nod.
Games like Command and Conquer were a major part of my love for the sci-fi genre. Especially the story about the series, I loved the whole concept of Tiberium and it slowly destroying the planet as well as the idea of Nod a quasi-religious group who uses their belief of Tiberium as a gift to help improve humanity.
This game also gave me my love of strategy games. I mean, I always loved turned based games, but what made this one special was that it was a real-time strategy game. For those who do not know what that means is that you had to think on the fly instead of being able to take your time like you can do while playing a turn based one.
Another reason as to why I loved this game is the Full Motion Video cut-scenes which became a stable for the franchise. It felt like those B-movies I enjoy watching, I also thought it was cool that a lot of the characters in the game were the people who helped put the game together, including Joseph Kucan as Kane who was also a writer and developer for the game. I think is really amazing and I wish more games would be like that.
Command and Conquer was a commercial and critical success, selling over three million copies and winning numerous rewards. Many people in the gaming world consider it to be one of the greatest video games of all time and defined what real-time strategy games are all about.
This game spawn the Tiberium series as well as the Red Alert series, all of which were incredible too. Oh! Before I forget, I also really loved the soundtrack of the game thank you Frank Klepacki.
This was the game that started it off and I couldn't be more appreciative of it. Thank you so much to everybody involved at Westwood Studios for bringing us gamers such a special game. And Happy 30th!
Until Next Time!
God Bless and Be Safe Everybody! 🙏🙏🙏
